For centuries, the thick forest that originally covered this area served as a refuge for pirates and corsairs. Now, Vedado is the heart of the most modern part of Havana. The Vedado Hotel-with its two towers built in the sober, elegant English style that was popular during the building and tourist booms of the '50s-was built here in 1952. The hotel's first slogan was �??The Vedado Hotel, in the best location�?�which was very apt, as it is just a few steps from the Rampa, one of the most important streets in Havana and the address of several ministries, galleries, shops, a handicrafts market and various entertainment spots.

�??El Cortijo�?� Restaurant features Cuban theme nights on Saturdays, with live music and Cuban cuisine from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The lobby bar, which is open round the clock, also has live performances of traditional Cuban music.
